Rene Russo - Red Carpet Interview, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2015

8 February 2015

Red carpet interview with Rene Russo

Interviewer: Rachel Riley

Q.  So you are nominated tonight.  How many BAFTA nominations have you had before?

A.  I have never been nominated for anything ever and to be a BAFTA is, like, out of all the nominations, a BAFTA would be the one.  It's like totally wild and weird and surreal.

Q.  So how nervous are you feeling tonight?

A.  I am not nervous. I know I am not going to win, so it's just fun to be here.  (Laughs)

Q.  Why do you say that?  That is a defeatist attitude.  Self-deprecating is what we British love.

DAN GILROY:  You can win it back when she does win.

A.  Shut up! You know what it is?  It is just cool to be nominated, and I really mean that.  You hear people say that and you are like: oh bullshit, you want to win.  For me, it is just so cool to be here.

Q.  And how was the nominees' event at Kensington Palace yesterday? Did you go?

A.  Do you know what? I got in super late and my back was really bad so I can't really believe I am standing here.  So I didn't go, but

Q.  Are you going to be going to some after parties?

A.  I guess there are some after parties, yes, but I don't know where.

Q.  Which films, other than your own, have impressed you this year?

A.  We didn't really like any other films this year.  We just liked Nightcrawler.  That was about it.

DAN GILROY:  That was the only film that was good.

A.  No, there were so many good ones.  People say: what's your favourite?  I don't know, man.  There were so many good films.  Whiplash was great.

DAN GILROY:  Birdman.

A.  You like Birdman?  I don't know, you know?  God, there are so many good and the actors are so incredible.  That is really, really tough.  I don't know.  And I loved The Grand Budapest Hotel.  They are just so good.

Q.  Just a personal question from me.  I have been a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal since I was a younger lady.  How is he to work with?

A.  First of all, he is so good in this film and he made me feel uncomfortable the whole time, which is exactly what I needed, you know, for my performance and he was amazing.  He had to stay really focused, though, because it was such a wild part.

Q.  So was he quite method?

A.  Yes.  He is more method.  I mean, I am, like, laughing and telling stupid jokes and then I can go into it, but some people are super method; and that is the way he works.  It was really cool to watch him.

Q.  Do you think the media is heading in a dangerous direction in real life?

A.  What do you say, Danny?  I would say

DAN GILROY:  I wrote Nightcrawler.  Yes.

A.  Yes, so ...

DAN GILROY:  Yes.  I think it is becoming more lurid, more graphic. I think the race for ratings and to get people to watch shows is extremely fierce and the way to do it is to show violent, graphic images. So I think it is going in that direction.

Q.  I am going to let you go off and head off to the press photographers.

DAN GILROY:  Yes, let's ...

A.  Oh, is that where I am going?  I guess I am off there.  Thank you very much.

Q.  Are you

A.  Are you cold?

Q.  Best of luck with your nomination.  Am I shivering?  I am not an actress.  I need to work on my craft to look warmer.

A.  Why am I not cool? That is so weird.

Q.  I just need to touch you for a little while.

A.  I feel terrible!

Q.  So how do you act warm?

A.  I am not cold at this moment at all.

Q.  I am asking for my own personal tips.

A.  You know, I can't.  If I am cold, I am cold.  There is no way

DAN GILROY:  We are going to have to take a photograph.

A.  We are going to take a photo.  God bless you.  I can tell you're freezing.

Q.  Congratulations on your nomination and enjoy your first BAFTAs.  Thank you.  Rene Russo.
