8 February 2015

Red carpet interview with Patricia Arquette

Interviewer: Zoe Ball

Q. Patricia, congratulations on your nomination and a beautiful film. It is like no other film they have ever made before. When you first heard about this project did you jump at the chance, or were you slightly apprehensive?

A. No, I jumped at the chance because I knew it had never been done before, but also the way that Richard Linklater, our director, spoke about the project; it was like making a love letter to the middle class and really, to all people; and you know, he talked about making a movie about ordinary people in this extraordinary way. And it has been incredibly moving for all of us, how much people have been affected by movie. Couples have called me and said they decided not to get divorced. People called and said that they called their mother immediately and apologised.

Q. That is a beautiful effect to have on people. And how wonderful is it -- I mean, you are a mother yourself -- how was it to see Ella and Lori growing with you as you made the film and growing up and making it through all of these things, in real life, as well as in the film?

A. Incredible. And also the way that they have moved through this whole process, because it has been a lot of intense attention on this movie which has been lovely. Ella has really moved through it so gracefully. He is so grounded. It says a lot about his parents.

Q.  It obviously does. What a wonderful chap. And how happy are you to see yourself amongst some of the nominees tonight? I mean, it is a very strong category. Which performances from the other ladies have you particularly enjoyed?

A. All of them. They are all incredibly powerful. And you know what? All of them have great bodies of work also, besides their films that they are nominated for.  So it is a great honour to be nominated alongside them.

Q.  And how much would you like to see Richard honoured tonight for his incredible directing skills?

A. So much, I do, I cannot tell you. I have been around for a long time. I have worked with some of the world's best directors. There is no other like Richard Linklater. I think he is incredibly brave. He has done something no-one else has ever done before. And he loves human beings so much, and I would love to see him honoured. I think he should be honoured. I wish I had that power to make that happen.

Q.  Let's hope that happens tonight. Have a beautiful night and congratulations. Beautiful film. Thank you, Patricia.
