Mark Ruffalo - Red Carpet Interview, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2015

8 February 2015

Red carpet interview with Mark Ruffalo

Interviewer: Zoe Ball

Q:  Congratulations, Mark Ruffalo

A.      Thank you.

Q.       …on your nomination and a fantastic film.  This is your lovely wife?

SUNRISE COIGNEY:  Yes.  I am so proud of him.

A.       Yes.  She did half the work, actually.

Q.      I was going to say, it is supportive work.  There should be awards for family.

SUNRISE COIGNEY:  Support award.

A.      Yes.  If I win tonight I will be giving it to her.

Q.      How strange is it to be up against Steve Carell in this category?

A.      I would say it is a real honour. It's strange.  I hope one of us wins.  That is all I have to say.

But I love him, and you know, I am really happy to be here and so that's, for me, that's the least I can hope for.

Q.      What was the most challenging thing about taking on the role for you?  Apparently, you used to wrestle at school so did that all come back?  I imagine it is a lot of physical training.

A.      It did not come back as easily as I had hoped.  I really felt my age, to be honest with you.  It was a lot of hard work and it was pretty painful.  It was probably the hardest thing I have ever done, ever.  It was very, very difficult.

Q.       What, harder than taking on superheroes?

A.      Superheroes are nothing in comparison.

Q.      I guess a lot of that is done with tricks and stuff, I suppose.  But this is actually a role that you had to do it all yourself?

A.       Yes.  CGI helps with that.  Everything you see is what we did, and it is tough. Dan Gable, one of the great wrestling icons, he says: once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy, and I think that is pretty true.

Q.      Fantastic.  I must try wrestling.

In your category, you are actually up against a former Hulk, Edward Norton.  Is that surreal?  Have you ever compared Hulk notes?

A.       Not really.  He is a friend of mine and, actually, I had dinner with him last night but we haven't compared Hulk notes.

Q.      It was a ridiculous question, frankly.

A.      No, no, it was a good question.  It was a ridiculous answer.

Q.      I think between us, I know.  And how pleased are you

A.      It is the kind of thing you don't talk about, you know what I'm saying.

Q.      I am actually going to have to let you go now.  We are going to end on this note.  My chat with Mark Ruffalo ended on this note. Good luck.  It is a fantastic film and an amazing performance.  Good luck, lovely to meet you.

A.      Thank you.
