La La Land - Winners' acceptance speech, Best Film, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2017

12 February 2017

Winners' acceptance speech by Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt for La La Land in the Best Film category

FRED BERGER:  Thank you. Jordan Horowitz, Marc Platt and I want to thank the Academy for this massive honour.  It really does mean so much because we have such admiration for the British film community, which challenges us and sets the bar to tell original and bold stories.  So thank you. As Damien and Emma noted, the joy of tonight is sharing this with the extraordinary family of artists who poured their hearts out on this film every day, led, of course, by Emma and Ryan, who never flinched no matter what crazy stuff Damien threw their way. Thank you guys. Above all, if you have seen this film, you know this belongs to Damien Chazelle, whose passion and reckless ambition are surpassed only by his grace, humility and generosity.  We are so lucky to be on this really special journey with you, Damien.  We love you. Thank you all.

JORDAN HOROWITZ: I just want to take a quick moment to congratulate and acknowledge everybody in this room. We have spent a lot of time together over these past couple of months, weeks - a lot of time - and it has been truly a pleasure getting to know many of you. There is a lot of love in this community and I think it is our responsibility as artists and creators to take that and harness it, to create work that inspires joy and hope and empathy and challenges people to drink - dream bigger and bolder -- inspires people to drink!  Inspires people to dream bigger and bolder and in technicolour. I think film, when it's at its best and most inspiring, reveals the fundamental human truth that there's more tying us together than tearing us apart.

MARC PLATT:  Lastly, ladies and gentlemen, what we try to do and what all the films that you have honoured tonight have tried to do is to demonstrate the great power of art, the great power of artists, the great power of cinema, that knows no boundaries, no borders.  Our language is universal, our music is transcendent and our passion is the glue that binds all of us together in our collective humanity, and we thank you and wish you a good night. Thank you.
