Jack O'Connell - Red Carpet Interview, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2015

8 February 2015

Red carpet interview with Jack O'Connell

Interviewer: Zoe Ball

Q. How do you feel tonight nominated for EE BAFTA, Rising Star and in quite incredible competition?

A.  I hope I remember to say EE before Rising Star every time.

Q.  I think you would be forgiven if you didn't somehow.  You have had quite a busy year, incredible work that you have been doing, unbroken, '71 this year.  You must be very excited about '71 in nominations tonight as well.

A.  Yeah, certainly.  I felt I was part of that project from very early, I have sort of seen it from the ground upwards, you know, and seen it fly the nest and received the reception that it has done.  It is very humbling.  Because they are story tellers, essentially, and we were not, we didn't have a particularly generous budget either.  So it was up against us, is what I am trying to say, and for it to receive recognition not only here as well, it is kind of doing all right in America as well, it restores a lot of faith.

Q.  A challenging project for a first feature as well for the team?

A.  Exactly, and Yann Demange, credit to him.  I think we will be seeing a lot of the fellow.

Q.  He is a genius.  Have you just been working with Jodie Foster?  How was that as an experience?

A.  I don't know.  I have met her once or twice but I have not worked with her yet, I am quite anxious.  She is cool though.  She strikes me as really cool, yes.

Q.  I am imagining you are very much in demand now as well.  How does that feel?  Is it worrying, is it scary?  Is it wonderful?

A.  I don't know.  I think there is a lot of emphasis in what I decide from here onwards and I have to be smart and keep my head screwed on anyway.  You know, just so I make sure I get myself off from not being typecast because I think I've got more strings to my bow than what I have necessarily been given a chance to demonstrate.  Now there is a lot of emphasis on what I do from here on, quite exciting.

Q.  I think you will make wise choices.  All the choices you have made so far have been brilliant.  We have a question that has come in on Twitter.  This is from Rachel Dalton, "if you could play any person living or dead who would it be and why?  #askthestars?"

A.  Paul Gascoigne, I know all the words to Fog on the Tyne.

Q.  Somebody is writing that as we speak.  Jack, good luck tonight.

A.  God bless you.

Q.  Jack O'Connell, up for EE Rising Star.
