Coco - Winner's Acceptance Speech, Animated Film, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2018

18 February 2018

Winner's acceptance speech by Lee Unkrich for Coco in the Animated Film category.

LEE UNKRICH: Thank you, everybody. Thank you to the British Academy for this award. It's an incredible honour. I would like to share it with the legions of talented and passionate people on my crew, in particular producer Darla K Anderson, who couldn't be here tonight, and my co-director and screenwriter, Adrian Molina.

Also our incredible cast, anchored by Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt and our multi-talented young star, Anthony Gonzalez. You are the heart and soul of Coco and it was a tremendous honour to work with you.

Thank you to the executive teams at Pixar and Disney, including Jim Morris, for believing in this unique story and supporting us every step of the way in our quest to make it culturally respectful.

Finally, the biggest thanks of all to the people of Mexico. Your culture and traditions inspired me to make Coco, and it would not exist without you and your endlessly beautiful celebration of Día de Muertos. With Coco, we have tried to take a step forward towards a world where non-white children can grow up seeing characters in movies that look and talk and live like they do.

Representation matters. Marginalised people deserve to feel like they belong. I hope that we've made a difference and I hope it's just a beginning.

Muchas gracias.
