Carol Dysinger- Winner's Acceptance Speech, British Short Film, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2020

2 February 2020

Winner's acceptance speech by Carol Dysinger for Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl) in the British Short Film category

CAROL DYSINGER:  Royal Albert Hall, right?

ELENA ANDREICHEVA:  Right.

CAROL DYSINGER:  Well, first off, I would like very much to thank BAFTA for this honour, and very much to thank A&E IndieFilms for the support and continuous support of this film, and also to thank my incredible British producer and the incredible company, Grain, who -- well, they know what a miracle this is.  And to thank Skateistan, a non-profit that supports boys and girls learning to skateboard to read and write so they can have a better life.  All over the world they do this.

I think the thing that I really would like to say tonight is that we can't let our elected leaders be the only ones who deal with the damage that has been done all over the world for many reasons.  It's been a bad hair day on both sides of the pond, I understand, and I think it is up to us as people to support the young people, because the young people are who will bring peace to us, and thank you very much for this honour.
