Red Carpet Interview with Aaron Sorkin

Q. Aaron Sorkin, welcome to the BAFTAs.
A. It's great to be here.
Q. How excited are you to see Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet both nominated for speaking your incredible words?
A. Thank you very much, I couldn't be more excited. Michael and Kate were a dream to work with. They're two of the greatest actors in the world. I couldn't have asked anything better. If I had one more wish, it would be that Danny Boyle was here as well. Because he was the captain of the ship.
Q. Is he working somewhere?
A. I'm sure he is, he's never not working.
Q. How was it to play those huge scenes, incredibly theatrical, a huge amount of language for Michael to contend with, how did those play out, a lot of rehearsal I believe?
A. The rehearsal was the key. We had more rehearsal time than most movies usually do and we did one act at a time. We rehearsed just the first act for two weeks, then shot just the first act, then shut everything down, rehearsed just the second act for two weeks, shot just the second act and so on. So that gave Michael, Kate and the rest of the cast a sort of play-like rehearsal period.
Q. A time to sort of recover and move on
A. Recover and move on. Now they do not have to deal with the first
act anymore they can concentrate on this. I'm sure once it was all over they never want to remember any of those words again.
Q. What are you working on next for us to get excited about?
A. I've written a new movie and I'm going to be directing it actually and we start shooting at the end of the summer and I'm also adapting To Kill a Mockingbird for Broadway.
Q. I've just read about that, that's an incredible project. How excited are you about that?
A. Well, I'm very excited. It's also very daunting. It's a novel that is revered, that we all love, I think it's going to be a great theatrical experience.
Q. An incredible category tonight. So many amazing screenplays, it's going to be tough
A. Honestly it's a cliché but the honour is being nominated along with these other great screenplays.
