British Academy Scotland Awards: New Trophy Design Unveiled

A new BAFTA Scotland Award trophy has been unveiled ahead of this year’s British Academy Scotland Awards

Glasgow, 2 November 2015: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Scotland, BAFTA Scotland, has today revealed a new BAFTA Scotland Award ahead of this year’s British Academy Scotland Awards on Sunday 15 November.

20 trophies, including three Outstanding Contribution Awards, will be handed out at this year’s prestigious event, hosted by Edith Bowman at the Radisson Blu, Glasgow.

Scottish designer Oliver J. Conway, a former apprentice of the original trophy designer and acclaimed artist Allan Ross, has created the new BAFTA Scotland Award. The awards are being cast at Charles Laing & Sons Ltd Brass and Iron Founders in Edinburgh using a pioneering 3D process that incorporates new and traditional methods to create the master mould.

The trophy enhances the original design and continues to feature the iconic BAFTA mask. It has gone from being set in aluminium to cast iron, creating a striking piece of art for each recipient. The features of the mask have been enhanced and the award now bears a closer representation to the original mask designed by Mitzi Cunliffe in 1955. The new award is now taller than before, standing at 300mm and weighing 2.9kg.

Designer Oliver Conway commented: “The design process has taken around 18 months and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with BAFTA Scotland. It was as important for me as it was for BAFTA that I to stay true to Allan’s original design, which we have achieved, whilst giving it a modern twist.

“We played around with a variety of finishes to ensure we got the highest quality for the trophy and I am proud of the end product. I do hope the winners enjoy them.”

Jude MacLaverty, Director of BAFTA Scotland, said: “It felt like the right time to update our trophy and I am delighted with the results.  Oliver is a fantastic designer and the quality of craftsmanship is outstanding.    We look forward to handing out the new-look trophies on 15 November.”
