The Inner City Cinema project, one of BAFTA Los Angeles' outreach initiatives, brought this year's BAFTA Best Animated Film winner BRAVE to Jesse Owens Park in South LA for a screening with over 150 local residents.
Beginning with one city park in 2005, BAFTA Los Angeles’ Inner City Cinema program has grown to bring films and filmmakers to the city’s most underprivileged areas.
Beginning in 2005, BAFTA Los Angeles began the Inner City Cinema program in collaboration with The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and Hollywood Outdoor Movies at Helen Keller Park. Since that time, the success of the program has seen screenings expanded to Athens Park, Ted Watkins Parks and with this screening of BRAVE, Jesse Owens Park.
Hosted with the full collaboration of The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, and with thanks to Hollywood Outdoor Movies, the evening's event included the special family screening of Brave, a live bagpiper in full Highland attire, contests and gifts for the kids, and some healthy food and drinks.
The Inner City Cinema project has had a tangible, positive effect on an area in which gang-related crime was very prevalent.
Many films have been screened for the community often with stars and filmmakers in attendance, holding lively and informative Q&A discussions including The Great Debaters, Pride, The Gridiron Gang, The Wizard of Oz , Madagascar and Academy Award Winning Tsotsi.
Many of the films have the stars and filmmakers in attendance, holding lively and informative Q&A discussions.
Guests seen at our past screenings include Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Jurnee Smollett, Nate Parker and Gavin Hood to name but a few.
BAFTA Los Angeles is also collaborating to help The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation build a new Community Center at Helen Keller Park, which will house a permanent Screening Room with a projection system funded by Warner Brothers Entertainment.
We thank all of our members and supporters who make this ongoing program possible.
