An American writer best known for adapting his own acclaimed 1971 novel for the screen, Blatty's screenplay for The Exorcist (1973) won an Oscar and the William Friedkin-directed film is considered one of the greatest horror movies ever made. His other screen credits included A Shot in the Dark (1964) and Legion/The Exorcist III (1990).
