An instantly recognisable voice to generations of television viewers, Whicker was a distinguished war reporter who lent his name and particular brand of urbane charm to a succession of eponymous globetrotting documentary series. The best known of these was Whicker’s World (1959-88) which alternately aired on the BBC and ITV.
