A veteran newsman particularly familiar to viewers in the Granada region , Wheeler began his career as an actor and appeared on screen with the likes of Ken Dodd and Les Dawson. He also provided voiceovers for many diverse programmes including Crown Court, World In Action and What The Papers Say.
