A film editor who worked on documentary subjects for the likes of Joris Ivens and Robert Flaherty, van Dongen's influence continues to be felt today. Her intensity and craft editing such films as Borinage (1933), The Spanish Earth (1937) and The Land (1942) helped marry the political with the aesthetic.
