Valentina Cortese

An Italian actress whose early career included roles in The Wandering Jew (1948) and The Glass Mountain, Cortese went on to star in films including The Barefoot Contessa (1954), Le Amiche (1955) and Juliet of the Spirits (1965). She was nominated for an Oscar for her supporting role as the ageing film star Severine in Francois Truffaut’s Day For Night (1973).
