An Austrian actor who oscillated between theatre, film and television over his sixty year career, Bikel excelled on stage in Fiddler on the Roof and The Sound of Music. On screen his major credits included The African Queen (1951), My Fair Lady (1964), and an Oscar-nominated supporting turn in The Defiant Ones (1958).
