A familiar and much loved character in one of the nation’s favourite soaps, Tarmey played the workshy Jack Duckworth – henpecked husband of Vera – in Coronation Street from 1979 until ill health precipitated his retirement in 2010. The following year he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards.
