Although he could walk down the street unrecognised Skelton’s talents as a voice artist helped create memorable characters that delighted several generations. These include the Daleks he played in Doctor Who from 1967, but most especially the outspoken puppet Zippy and his emollient foil George in children’s favourite Rainbow (1973-1992).
