A German actor who came to wider attention in a succession of international hits, Sander starred in Volker Schlöndorff’s The Tin Drum (1979), played a captain in Wolfgang Petersen’s Das Boot (1981) and the angel Cassiel in Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire (1987) and its sequel Faraway, So Close! (1993).
