An influential stage director from the 1950s onwards, Planchon came late to film, taking supporting roles in films such as The Return of Martin Guerre (1982) before bringing his own adaptation of Molière’s Georges Dandin (1987) to the screen. Other directorial credits include Louis, enfant roi (1991) and Lautrec (1997).
