After appearing in several films for Ken Hall in her native Australia, including Dad and Dave Come to Town (1939), Richards moved to Hollywood in the early 40s and soon won a contract with MGM. She demonstrated a talent for subtlety in films such as romantic thriller Love Letters (1945).
