A British writer who began working with The Comic Strip troupe transcribing their live shows in Soho, Richens went on to co-write 25 of their films alongside Peter Richardson beginning with Five Fo Mad in Dorset (1982). He notably also worked on Jenny Eclair Squats (1997) and Churchill: The Hollywood Years (2004).
