A particular favourite of directors Michael Winner and John Landis, Paynter lit such movies as Hannibal Brooks (1969), The Nightcomers (1971), Superman II (1980), An American Werewolf in London (1981), Trading Places (1985) and When The Whales Came (1989). He also shot Michael Jackson’s groundbreaking pop promo Thriller for Landis.
