An American actress best known for her Oscar-winning turn as the deaf, blind and speech-impaired Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker (1962), Duke had earlier originated the role on stage. She went on to find television success with The Patty Duke Show (1963-1966), and during her career won three Emmys from nine nominations.
