Although self taught, Parks was a successful photographer for Life magazine before turning his hand to filmmaking. The Learning Tree (1969) was the first studio movie directed by a black filmmaker while his next, Shaft (1971), proved more influential still. Further films include Shaft's Big Score (1972) and Leadbelly (1976).
