As one of the heroes of the science drama Doomwatch (1970-72), Oates appeared regularly on British television from the 1960s. He featured in a 1972 film version, and made guest appearances in series such as The Three Musketeers (1966-67), The Mask of Janus (1965), The Avengers (1967-68) and Bergerac (1991).
