A Portuguese filmmaker who continued working prolifically up until his death aged 106, Oliveira struggled to make films during his early career due to censorship laws but gained international recognition in the 1980s with films including Francisca (1981). His body of work was recognised by numerous film festivals including Cannes, Venice and Berlin.
