A Spanish filmmaker frequently at odds with General Franco’s regime, Berlanga came to prominence with the award winning Welcome, Mr Marshall (1952). His best known films include Miracles on Thursday (1957), Placido (1961), The Executioner (1963) with The Heifer (1985) and Everyone To Jail! (1993) notable among his later work.
