Kirby was well cast as both sinister gangster and loveable goof, the latter of which he played to memorable effect as Billy Crystal's best friend in When Harry Met Sally... (1989) and City Slickers (1991). Dramatic roles included The Godfather II (1974) opposite Robert De Niro, and Donnie Brasco (1997).
