One of the great Japanese actors, Takakura made his name playing tough but honourable outsider in action movies and ninkyo yakuza films such as the Showa zankyo-den series (1965-1972) and A Fugitive from the Past (1965). His major Western credits included The Yakuza (1974) and Black Rain (1989).
