An influential figure in post-war Polish cinema, Kawalerowicz made his mark with a succession of films that reflected his iconoclasm and resistance to religious dogma. These include Pamiatka Celulozy (1954), Cien (1955), Prawdziwy Koniec Wielkiej Wojny (1957), Cannes Special Jury Prize-winner Matka Joanna Od Anialow (1961) and Faraon (1966).
