A gag man who began his career writing for Milton Berle, Brecher later scripted the Marx Brothers films At The Circus (1939) and Go West (1940). He co-wrote Meet Me In St Louis (1944), created the sitcom The Life Of Riley (1949-58) and directed features including Somebody Loves Me (1952).
