By joining the Army Film Unit during the war, Hopkinson fulfilled his earliest filmmaking ambitions. There he shot information films and recorded historic battlefield scenes, some featuring in Desert Victory (1943). He later won acclaim as a documentary director, with titles such as Bandwagon (1959) and African Awakening (1962).
