Best known to British audiences for his role as the wonderfully vague Colonel Reynolds in the David Croft-Jimmy Perry sitcom It Ain’t Half Hot Mum (1974-81), Hewlett was a character actor active on stage and the occasional film. He later reunited with Croft and Perry for You Rang M’Lord? (1988-1993).
