Classically trained, Scots-born Herlie appeared in an extensive range of theatrical productions before delivering her most notable screen performance as Gertrude in Olivier’s Hamlet (1948). She also played the role to Richard Burton’s Hamlet on Broadway, and was a series regular in the American soap All My Children (1976-2008).
