Adapting two of his novels for the screen, Hackney caught the mood of post-war iconoclasm with Private’s Progress (1956) and I’m Alright Jack (1959). His screenwriting skills were also called upon for Watch Your Stern (1960), You Must Be Joking! (1965) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1960) for television.
