An actor who achieved enduring fame from one role, Gilmore was best known for his uncompromising lead performance in oceangoing saga The Onedin Line (1971-80). A former singer, he also featured in many other series and popular films including Carry On Up The Khyber (1968) and Warlords of Atlantis (1978).
