An East German director whose work brought occasional conflict with the controlling Socialist Unity Party, Beyer's best known film - Jacob The Liar (1974) - was seen as an allegorical take on these issues. His other films include Nackt unter den Wolfen (1963), Karbid und Sauerampfer (1963) and Spur der Steine (1966).
