One of Britain's finest cinematographers, Francis lit such films as Room At The Top (1958), Sons & Lovers (1960) and The Innocents (1961). He also directed a succession of Hammer horror movies, before triumphantly returning behind the camera to light The Elephant Man (1980), Glory (1989) and Cape Fear (1991).
