A prolific screenwriter under the billing of Donald James, Wheal wrote for such television favourites as The Saint (1968-69), The Champions (1968), Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969-70), Department S (1969-70), Jason King (1971-72) and The Persuaders (1971-72), later penning his wartime memoirs and a series of popular Inspector Vadim novels.
