A versatile director who began in documentary before finding success in drama, Wheatley made several films for Omnibus and shot The Road To 1984 (1984) for Granada. He won acclaim for his debut feature The Magic Toyshop (1987) and several Catherine Cookson adaptations, beginning with The Fifteen Streets (1990).
