A character actor originally trained in dance, Cater was a member of the inaugural RSC company in 1961. He proved a dependable player in a variety of television programmes, including Dad’s Army (1970) - as Jones’s nemesis - I, Claudius (1976), The Duchess of Duke Street (1976) and The Other ‘Arf (1980).
