A former television cameraman, Butt was a double BAFTA winner who came to prominence directing several BBC sitcom hits. He was most closely associated with the work of writer John Sullivan, directing episodes of Citizen Smith (1977-80), Only Fools & Horses (1981-87), Just Good Friends (1983-84) and Dear John (1986-87).
