A professional dancer before he went blind, Birkett refused to let this impairment inhibit his artistic ambitions. As well as performing on stage he featured in films for Derek Jarman including Jubilee (1978), The Tempest (1979) and Caravaggio (1986), and in Jonathan Miller’s BBC production of Troilus and Cressida (1981).
