An American character actor on screen from the mid 1950s, Avery played supporting roles in such movies as The Harder They Fall (1956), The Magnificent Seven (1960), Love With The Proper Stranger (1963), Hud (1963), Nevada Smith (1966), Hombre (1967), Papillon (1973) and in more recent years Donnie Brasco (1997).
