An instantly recognisable figure, Aston was a leading light among the experts on the popular Channel 4 archaeology series Time Team (1994-2012). He had been responsible for establishing the format of the programme upon its launch, and his onscreen appearances came alongside his more formal academic responsibilities at Bristol University.
