A former critic and movie buyer for German television, Engel's legacy to British cinema was the formation - with his wife Pam - of Artificial Eye. Founded in 1976, the company introduced popular European films to British audiences, sometimes on their own art house screens. Engel also wrote and directed Melancholia (1988).
