Best remembered as Buzz in Rebel Without A Cause (1955), Allen played the charismatic gang leader who challenged James Dean’s Jim to a fateful ‘chicken run’ car race. He later moved behind the camera and enjoyed notable success directing episodic series such as Hill Street Blues (1981-84) and Dallas (1978-86).
