Albert Maysles

Documentary filmmaker
26 November 1926 to 5 March 2015

An American documentary filmmaker who pioneered ‘direct cinema’ with his brother, David, the soundman, Mayles sought to capture truth while keeping the camera as unobtrusive as possible on films including Gimme Shelter (1970) and Grey Gardens (1975). He received an Oscar nomination for his short documentary Christo’s Valley Curtain (1974).
