North Yorkshire born actor Sir Ben Kingsley began his career in the theatre. Having been turned down by the prestigious London acting school RADA in 1965, he was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company two years later.

Over the following years, his career continued to go from strength to strength with performances at the Royal Court and National Theatre to his eventual big-break into the film industry, taking on the starring role in Ghandi.

In November 2011, Sir Ben came to the Academy to discuss his fascinating career to date, with Francine Stock, in front of a BAFTA audience.

I’m deeply fascinated by timbre and body language and rhythm and patterns of behaviour.

In the full video, available to watch now on BAFTA Guru, he recalls his early experience of auditioning at RADA and how he came to change his name. He discusses how he approached his most famous part, Gandhi, and his methodology in tackling any role, referring to 'a piece of mythology' that helps to catalyse a performance.
